About the Ingredients for a Tie Dye Layered Cake

Cake mix – You want to specifically use white cake mix as it will make the colours look more vibrant. You can use your favourite homemade white cake recipe if desired.

Eggs – Use the whites only so that the cake stays white. They should be room temperature.

Water – Should be room temperature. You can also use room temperature milk if you like.

Oil – Canola or vegetable oil is best here for a nice tender and moist cake.

Food coloring – Gel food coloring will give the best, most vibrant colours without affecting the flavours.

Butter – You should use unsalted butter, but to be honest, unless I am testing a recipe, I always use salted anyway.

Sugar – Powdered or icing sugar.

Cream – Heavy whipping cream is best but you can even use milk if you like.

Vanilla extract – Pure vanilla extract will give you the best flavour, but clear vanilla extract will help keep the frosting white.

Food coloring – Gel food coloring will give the best, most vibrant colours without affecting the flavours.

How to Make a Unicorn Layer Cake

Yields: 15-18 Servings | Prep time: 30 Minutes | Cook time: 32 Minutes

Ingredients:

For the Tie Dye Cake:

  • 2 boxes of white cake mix
  • 8 large Egg whites
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • Blue, Purple and Pink gel food coloring

For the Vanilla Frosting:

  • 3 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 5 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Blue, Black, Purple and Pink gel food coloring

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degress F. Flour and grease three 9″ cake pans. Set aside.

Using a hand mixer and large bowl, beat all cake ingredients until combined and smooth.

Divide the cake batter into 4 bowls. Mix in a few drops of Blue food coloring into one bowl, a few drops of pink food coloring into the second bowl, and a few drops of purple food coloring into the third bowl. Leave the fourth bowl, as is.

Alternate the batters by scooping in ¼ cup of batter into each cake pan on top of each other to create a tye dye effect.

Place into the oven and bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool about 20 minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack. Let the cakes completely cool before frosting.

Using a standing mixer, beat together all the frosting ingredients, except for the food colors, until combined and smooth but stiff with peaks.

Scoop 1 cup of frosting into each of the 3 medium bowls and mix in a few drops of blue, pink and
purple into their own respective bowls. Place the frosting into their own piping bags.

Scoop ½ cup of frosting into a small bowl and mix in a few drops of black food coloring. Scoop
frosting into a piping bag.

Place one cake layer onto the cake board and cut the dome off the cake to make an even layer. Repeat with other two layers.

Scoop 1 cup of white frosting onto the bottom layer and spread evenly. Place the second cake layer on top and spread evenly 1 more cup of frosting, place the last layer of cake on top. Use the remaining white frosting and frost the entire cake.

Using the blue, pink and purple piping bags, start piping the “Hair” for the unicorn on the top and around one side of the cake to create a “Mane”.

Using leftover pink frosting, frost the plastic ears, outline the ears with white frosting and blue frosting.

Place the horn and ears onto the cake.

Use the black frosting to pipe out the detail of the eyes.

Enjoy!
