Ingredients and Substitutions
- Pink Candy Melts
- These create the colorful base for the hearts and are easy to melt and work with. If you don’t have pink candy melts, you can use white candy melts or white chocolate chips and add a few drops of pink gel food coloring to achieve a similar hue.
- White Candy Melts
- Used for drizzling and decoration, they add a nice contrast to the pink base. White chocolate chips or almond bark can also work here, but be sure to temper them if you want a glossy finish.
- Hot Chocolate Mix
- This provides the rich cocoa flavor inside the bomb. Store-bought hot chocolate mix works perfectly, but you can also make your own by combining cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and a pinch of salt. For added variety, flavored mixes like mint or caramel hot chocolate are great options.
- Mini Marshmallows
- These are essential for that classic hot chocolate bomb experience when they pop out of the heart and float in the milk. Dehydrated marshmallow bits can be used for a crunchier texture or if you want a more compact filling.
- Heart-Shaped Silicone Mold
- This is key to creating the signature heart shape. If you don’t have a heart-shaped mold, other silicone molds like spheres or squares can be used, though the final product will differ in appearance. Silicone molds are best for easy removal without breaking the chocolate.

How to Make Heart-Shaped Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Pink Candy Melts
- 1/2 cup White Candy Melts
- 2 tablespoons Hot Chocolate Mix (per bomb)
- 1/4 cup Mini Marshmallows
- 1 Heart-Shaped Silicone Mold
Directions:
Melt the Pink Candy Melts:
- Place the pink candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval to prevent burning.
Coat the Mold:
- Add a spoonful of melted pink candy into the center of each mold cavity.
- Use the back of a spoon to spread the chocolate evenly, ensuring it covers the entire mold up to the edges.
- Repeat to coat the mold twice for durability. Allow the chocolate to dry completely between layers.
Demold the Shells:
- Carefully remove the hardened chocolate shells from the mold and place them on wax paper.
Decorate with White Chocolate:
- Melt the white candy melts in the microwave using 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval.
- Transfer the melted white chocolate to a piping bag or plastic baggie.
- Cut a small hole in the tip and drizzle over the pink chocolate shells for decoration.
Assemble the Bombs:
- Heat a pan on the stove over low heat.
- Gently press the edge of two chocolate halves against the pan to slightly melt the edges.
- Fill one half with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and 4-5 mini marshmallows.
- Press the two halves together while the edges are still melted to seal them into a heart shape.
Enjoy Your Hot Chocolate Bomb:
- Once set, place the bomb in a mug.
- Pour hot milk (approximately 1 cup) slowly over it, aiming for one spot, and watch it burst open.
- Stir well and enjoy!
Tips
- Pour hot milk slowly and steadily into the same spot for the best explosion effect.
- Ensure the chocolate is completely dry between layers to prevent cracking.
