Ingredients & Substitutions
- Ground Beef – Extra lean ground beef is ideal to prevent excess grease, but lean beef works too. Ground turkey or chicken can be used for a lighter version.
- Breadcrumbs – Italian-style breadcrumbs add seasoning, but plain breadcrumbs with ½ teaspoon of Italian seasoning can be substituted. Panko can also be used for a slightly different texture.
- Onion – Yellow onion provides a mild, slightly sweet flavour. White onion can be used for a sharper taste, or swap with onion powder (1 teaspoon) if needed.
- Eggs – Help bind the meatloaf together. There’s no good substitute for eggs in this recipe, but an egg replacer may work if necessary.
- Pizza Sauce – Enhances the pizza flavour in place of traditional ketchup. Marinara or tomato sauce with a pinch of Italian seasoning can be used as a substitute.
- Garlic Powder – Ensures even flavour distribution. Fresh minced garlic (2 cloves) can be used instead.
- Salt & Pepper – Essential seasonings to enhance flavour. Adjust to taste.
- Mozzarella Cheese – Provides a melty, classic pizza topping. Cheddar, provolone, or a pizza blend can be used instead.
- Pepperoni – Turkey pepperoni or plant-based alternatives work well too.
- Olives – Optional, but they bring a briny, salty contrast. Other toppings like mushrooms, bell peppers, or jalapeños can be added.
