When are strawberries in season?
Strawberries can be found in produce sections of grocery stores and farmer’s markets all year round. However, the best tasting strawberries tend to be those harvested locally during your local strawberry season.
Most of the strawberries in the grocery stores during winter are from warm climates such as South America.
In the north, strawberries tend to be ready from May through June. In the south, strawberries are ready from January through April.
The exact dates will vary depending upon the weather and other factors.

About the Ingredients for Strawberry Caprese Appetizers
Strawberries – Fresh, local strawberries are best here but if it isn’t strawberry season just look for firm but bright red strawberries with green leaves. Avoid strawberries that are mushed or have mold.
Basil – When buying basil, look for fresh, vibrant green leaves with no dark spots.
Cheese – Mini mozzarella balls or Ciliegine are the perfect size for these skewers.
Balsamic Vinegar – The warm balsamic glaze will start to melt the cheese on contact. For a cleaner presentation, avoid adding the glaze to the cheese while drizzling it onto the skewers.
Skewers – You will need 16 6” wooden skewers.

How to Make Strawberry Caprese Skewers with Balsamic Glaze
Serves: 4 | Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
16 fresh, small strawberries, washed and cut in half across the width, hull intact
32 medium fresh basil leaves, washed and patted dry
16 Ciliegine (mini-Mozzarella balls)
1 c. balsamic vinegar
2 T. high-quality extra-virgin olive oil to drizzle, optional
Directions:
- Thread the top half of one strawberry onto a 6” wooden skewer with the hull facing up. Next, fold one basil leaf in half, dark side facing out, and add it to the skewer. Add one mini-Mozzarella ball, followed by another folded basil leaf, and the bottom half of the strawberry.
- Repeat Step #1 with the remaining strawberries, basil, and Mozzarella until you have 16 completed skewers. Arrange on a serving platter and set aside.
- To prepare the glaze, add balsamic vinegar to a small sauté pan over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until the vinegar is reduced to about 1/3 of its original volume.
- Remove glaze from heat and let cool slightly. Drizzle over the skewers, along with some extra virgin olive oil, if desired. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
