Tips for Making the BEST 7 Layer Dip Cups
- Increase or decrease the amount of each layer depending on your preferences.
- The taco seasoning may be added to the sour cream instead; however, it will change the color and no longer be a bright white color in the layering
- This recipe makes full 6 cup servings. You can definitely use a little less of each ingredient and yield 8 cups that aren’t quite so full if you want to stretch this recipe a bit further.
- These can be prepared a day in advance. The guacamole should not turn brown as long as it’s pressed between the layers and there’s no air getting to it.
- Only layer the ingredients in the order specified or you will not got nice clean looking layers.
- Make it one big dip by doubling the recipe and preparing the layers in a baking dish.
How to Store Leftover 7 Layer Dip
If you have extra 7 layer dip cups left over from your gathering, you want to make sure that you properly store them so they stay fresh and delicious!
The most effective way to store 7 layer dip cups is in the refrigerator. Make sure that your cups are tightly sealed with a lid or plastic wrap. This will help to keep air and moisture out, maintaining the quality of your dip. It is also important to label the cups with the date they were made so that you can track how long they have been stored.
I do not recommend freezing this dip. Freezing can cause the ingredients to separate and result in a less than desirable dip.
Keep dips stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
About the Ingredients for 7 Layer Dip
Refried beans – Use your favourite brand of refried beans.
Taco seasoning – You can also substitute with homemade taco seasoning.
Guacamole – Store bought is a good short cut but homemade guacamole is so worth it!
Sour cream – Use your favourite sour cream. I would avoid using light sour cream though as it may not hold up well against the other layers. We can get 18% milk fat sour cream here and that is my absolute favourite.
Salsa – Use store bought or homemade tomato salsa. Pico de gallo is a good swap.
Cheese – I used shredded colby jack cheese but you can use cheddar, Monterey jack, pepper jack etc.. I would also skip the pre-shredded cheese as they just don’t taste as good as brick cheese.
Tomatoes – Fresh, ripe round tomatoes work well here. Skip the canned tomatoes.
Onions – You can garnish with a little green onions, or skip this entirely.
Olives – Black olives are a fun addition, but also optional. You could substitute with sliced jalapeno instead for a spicy kick.
